I am writing this post to help the reader find their way
through the minefield of finding a competent and qualified Hypnotherapist. Most people reading this will probably be shocked to learn that at this point in time there is no regulation or control in who can call themselves a qualified hypnotherapist and set themselves in business. In fact I would like to invite you to do an internet search for Hypnotherapy training. I did so this morning, and within minutes I had over 60 supposed colleges offering me training, some offered online courses, some weekend residential courses and the price of these ranged from £300 to over £5000 to become a qualified hypnotherapist. They all offered the rather dubious qualifications of either Diploma in Hypnotherapy or Certificate in Hypnotherapy, neither of which are officially recognised or accredited qualifications and neither of which truly make the purchaser a qualified hypnotherapist. Many of them claim to be accredited by impressive sounding associations but if you dig a little deeper you will find that these spurious organisations belong to the same people as the rather dodgy college. What all these courses have in common is that they are all focussed on how to build a business model which will make you rich! Perhaps what shocked me most was I uncovered one such college offering me a diploma in Hypnotherapy for £30 and for just another £5 I could have a distinction. All I had to do was pay the money online and print off my certificate and I would then be a qualified hypnotherapist. So in essence you could have a certificate in Hypnotherapy with distinction in less time than it has taken you to read this post.
My name is Dr David Postlethwaite. I have been practising Hypnotherapy here in the UK and in many other countries for over 30 years. I have PhD in Psychology, a BSc in Psychology and various Post Graduate Diplomas in Psychotherapy, Hypnotherapy and Counselling. All my qualifications have been gained through hard work from recognised universities and are attested by the UK government and various other world governments.
One of the warning signs that anyone looking for a therapist should look out for is the number of sessions they tell you that you will need. Traditional solution focussed hypnotherapy carried out by a competent qualified hypnotherapist will only require one session. If a therapist says that it is going to need more than one session, then what they are operating is a business model and not a therapy model
So when looking for a qualified hypnotherapist be diligent, check:
- Check the qualifications they should have at least a degree in Psychology
- Are they a member of the International Hypnotherapy Association.
- How many sessions do they want you to have – remember a qualified hypnotherapist will help you with one session.
- Do they carry full medical and public liability insurance.
