speaking is an issue that I deal with regularly; the thought of getting up in front of a crowd and talking will throw many people into a state of panic. In today’s world many people are utilising email, social media and texting to communicate, which means of course that there’s rarely a necessity to speak in to an audience. Which means that when public speaking situations do arise understandably people feel anxious. For some people this anxiety develops into a phobia – known as glossophobia and this phobia can be easily helped with public speaking hypnotherapy. Public speaking may be avoidable, but for some people it’s not

In this post I will look at how public speaking hypnotherapy can reduce anxiety and glossophobia and is so doing can help you build confidence.

Glossophobia is a form of social anxiety and a social phobia. When someone is speaking publicly, the audience will be paying attention to them and listening to what they have to say. It is thought that Glossophobia comes from a fear of being judged, this can be caused when a large number of people are paying attention to the speaker. This, combined with doubts over their own ability to deliver can feel overwhelming, it is these issues and doubts that public speaking hypnotherapy resolves.The fear of public speaking will be reinforced when the speaker makes mistakes. Even if they only make one very small mistake when speaking, their minds will entirely focus in on this, creating a justification of their fears.

Symptoms of glossophobia in general are:

  • avoiding situations where you may be required to speak in front of a group
  • feelings of panic when asked to speak publicly
  • nausea
  • increased heart rate/palpitations
  • shaking
  • dry mouth

To feel a little anxiety when asked to speak in public is to be expected. If the anxiety overwhelms the speaker however and holds them back from what they want to do in life, they should consider seeking support in the form of public speaking hypnotherapy.I would ask the reader to remember that a fear of public speaking isn’t just about speaking in front of a crowd. Someone with glossophobia may well withdraw from any number of situations, such as asking a stranger for directions, attending job interviews and speaking to shop assistants. It is a phobia that can have severe effects on day-to-day life but is very receptible to change with public speaking hypnotherapy.

How can public speaking hypnotherapy help?

As with all phobias, glossophobia isn’t something that someone can control consciously. People may tell them to ‘relax’, but this rarely does little to control their symptoms. This is because the symptoms their experience originates from the subconscious. Public speaking hypnotherapy works with their unconscious to find out where the origin of their anxiety comes from. In almost all cases I see it comes from misinformation learned from a previous experience. Public speaking hypnotherapy will help to identify this and I will use suggestion techniques to correct any miss learned behaviours.

If a behaviour learned, then it stands that it can be unlearned with the help of public speaking hypnotherapy which will change the meaning or properties of those early experiences, this will then influence the way the subject will feel about certain situations in the present. As well as this reframing, I will also teach my client methods of changing how they feel in the here and now.

Public speaking hypnotherapy – fear and the mind

When a person has the experience of fear, their minds will  work against them. They will experience a rush of automatic, negative thoughts that feed into their sense of self-doubt. Becoming more aware of these thoughts and speaking to themselves with respect and kindness is a great first step to managing your their of public speaking. Fear makes their minds behave in a different way, logic and reason is gone, pit of the window. Their mind does this by distorting their reality and fixating on the negative.This fear and anxiety can cause the speaker  to lose their perspective, thinking their lives will be over if it doesn’t go well.

How public speaking hypnotherapy works

Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation. When I guide my client into this wonderful enjoyable state, their unconscious becomes more receptive. This means that I can talk with this part of their mind to uncover the origins of the behaviour and influence their thinking patterns. Once established I can use positive suggestion to change the origin of their thoughts. My aim here is to bring about positive thinking and a sense of calm when faced with public speaking, instead of the previous flood of negativity.

The first thing to consider when choosing a hypnotherapist is the practitioner’s qualifications. Look for a degree qualified mental health care professional — such as a psychologist, psychotherapist, psychiatric nurse practitioner, counsellor, social worker, or medical doctor — who is also a hypnotherapist. Unfortunately, there are many therapists advertising who have nothing more than an online qualification, they will usually claim to have either a diploma or certificate in Hypnotherapy, these are not recognised qualifications. You can also ask if they’re affiliated with any professional associations, such as the International Hypnotherapy Association.

 

If for example, a hypnotist uncovers trauma while doing hypnotherapy, they need to know how to treat trauma. In other words, having the education and training to diagnose and treat mental health conditions — which comes from being a degree qualified Psychologist — is a key component in the success of hypnotherapy and of course your safety.
