someone to understand the relationship between their sub-conscious mind and gut, and relieve the stress and anxiety brought on by IBS, to give relief from their symptoms. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a complex condition of the digestive system and gut that makes the bowel to become very sensitive. The condition brings about persistent pain and discomfort in the abdomen and often, the nerves and muscles don’t work as they should. IBS is one of the most common disorders of the digestive system; and affects one in five people in their lifetime. Research has shown that women are more likely than men to suffer from IBS and their symptoms may be more severe, but can be easily helped with irritable bowel syndrome hypnotherapy

A small percentage people suffering with irritable bowel syndrome find their symptoms to be nothing more an occasional nuisance, for other people, however, this complex condition can adversely affect their quality of life. While IBS can develop at any time, it often occurs when a person is in their twenties.

Symptoms are variable whilst some individuals with irritable bowel syndrome suffer constipation, others must live with diarrhoea, while others may suffer from both. The pain can range from mild to severe and may happen at a particular time of the day.

Irritable bowel syndrome hypnotherapy – Symptoms of IBS

Symptoms are very different from person to person and can be experienced at differing severities. In some sufferers, the symptoms seem to be caused by something they have had to eat or drink, stressful periods, or food poisoning. Some of the more common symptoms include pain and discomfort in the abdomen, swollen abdomen, indigestion, feeling full vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, cramp, heartburn and muscle pains. All of which can be helped with irritable bowel syndrome hypnotherapy.

Causes of IBS

While the exact cause of IBS is still somewhat unclear, there is research that suggests it may be due to over-active gut. For example, if the contractions of the muscles in the gut wall become abnormal or overactive. Problems such as increased sensitivity to the amount of gas in the bowel and increased serotonin levels are also thought to play a role in the development of IBS. There is also much scientific evidence to show that a person’s emotional state can cause problems in the gut. Feelings of anxiety and stress can cause the individual to suffer irregular bowel habits and symptoms can be exasperated. These feelings will in time interfere with the regularity of the digestive system, even in those who have not previously experienced IBS. The link between the subconscious mind and the gut is an interesting one and effectively by undertaking irritable bowel syndrome hypnotherapy you are learning to use your sub-conscious mind to help control your digestion.

When choosing a hypnotherapist it is very important that you find a reputable and qualified therapist who is a member of and governed by the ethics ad standards of the International Hypnotherapy Association.
