Hypnotherapy self-esteem –  is the way someone describes the image and opinion they have of themselves. It is how they think and imagine, the type of person they are, their ability to perform, and what they expect of themselves in the future.

When someone has high self-esteem, this is healthy; they will feel good about themselves and have a healthy and promising outlook on life. If a person has high self-esteem, it gives them the courage and strength to deal with whatever life throws at them – without it having a long-term and negative impact on their health.

If someone has low self-esteem, their thoughts and feelings about themselves can be detrimental. They are more likely to think about their self-perceived weaknesses and be negatively judgemental about the things they do and any errors they make.  Having low self-esteem means the way they look at their entire life is affected. Their mental and physical health can suffer due to low self-esteem. It is imperative to seek help to make sure long-term problems are not developing. People often talk about having low ‘self-esteem’ or low ‘self-confidence’ to describe how they feel about themselves. However, although confidence affects self-esteem, they are two different concepts. For example, they could be self-confident in academic fields, but not so much when it comes to sport or games. So it is possible for a person to be self-confident but to have low self-esteem – and vice versa. If they can learn to value themselves, then it follows that their self-esteem will improve. The relationships someone has in their youth, parents, siblings, friends and teachers help them to form the opinion they have about themselves. As they progress into adolescence, the messages they are given can shape their perception of self-worth.

There has been much research to suggest that the media can be another source of low self-esteem among young people.
