Fear of water hypnotherapy – the fear of water or

fear of water hypnotherapy
Overcome your fear

aquaphobia, is a phobia that I deal with regularly in my Gateshead practice. Like all phobias that I deal with on a daily basis, it can vary hugely in its severity from one person to another person. I find some clients are only afraid of deep water or powerful currents, while others that I see are afraid of swimming pools and bathtubs. However, no matter how severe the one thing they all have in common is they can be alleviated with just one session of fear of water hypnotherapy.

In some instances, my client afraid of entering the water, whilst other clients I see cannot stand to even look at a large body of water. I have even seen cases where the fear of water is so severe that even being splashed or sprayed with water can cause a paralysing phobic reaction, but even in these cases fear of water hypnotherapy has solved the issue.

Causes of Aquaphobia

The most common reason for aquaphobia is a past bad experience If my client has been through a near-drowning experience, shipwreck, or even a bad swimming lesson, this will explain why they developed a phobia of water. Learning to swim is a normal part of growing up for many children, and therefore frightening experiences can be and often are common.

The bad or poor experience need not have happened to you directly. Research has found that after the film Jaws was released in 1975, reports of water phobia, as well as shark phobia, increased dramatically, in Psychology we call this Social Learning theory and once again these phobias can be unlearned with fear of water hypnotherapy.

Like all the phobias I deal with, the symptoms of aquaphobia vary between my clients. Generally speaking, the more severe the phobia, the more severe the symptoms will be. You might shake, freeze in place, or attempt to escape, this is known as the flight or fight response. My clients often report developing anticipatory anxiety in the days or weeks preceding an upcoming encounter with water. They will often refuse to get into the water or start panicking as soon as they step in.

My goal for my client is for them to become comfortable around water, and with just one session of fear of water hypnotherapy this can be easily achieved.

The first thing to consider when choosing a hypnotherapist whether for fear of water hypnotherapy or indeed any other therapy, is the practitioner’s qualifications. Look for a degree qualified mental health care professional — such as a psychologist, psychotherapist, psychiatric nurse practitioner, counsellor, social worker, or medical doctor — who is also a hypnotherapist. Unfortunately, there are many therapists advertising fear of water hypnotherapy and other therapies, who have nothing more than an online qualification, they will usually claim to have either a diploma or certificate in Hypnotherapy, these are not recognised qualifications. You can also ask if they’re affiliated with any professional associations, such as the International Hypnotherapy Association.

If for example, a hypnotist uncovers trauma while doing hypnotherapy, they need to know how to treat trauma. In other words, having the education and training to diagnose and treat mental health conditions, which only comes from being a degree qualified Psychologist, this is a key component in the success of hypnotherapy and of course your safety.
